The Monkey Kingdom was without a doubt one of the most exciting Zoo additions to have ever been planned. Sadly though, it wasn’t to be. Even though planning for this fantastic interactive area was approved, Chessington opted not to proceed with construction. The reasons behind this? Hotel expansion. This development was scrapped as the area was to be used to expand the resorts accommodation offering.
The core of Monkey Kingdom would’ve seen a complete retheme of the Monkey & Bird Gardens. It would’ve featured a very Indonesian Temple / Aztec theme that would’ve brought this area to life. With brand new raised guest walkways and a huge free-flight bird aviary. The plans shown below are very detailed and allow us to see just how the thematic Monkey Kingdom would have been.
