Goodbye Scorpion Express

Goodbye, Scorpion Express. A beloved chapter in Chessington World of Adventures’ history is coming to a close. Scorpion Express, the park’s long-standing family coaster, is now being dismantled after delighting guests for over 30 years.
Work on the ride’s removal began this week, with contractors cutting through sections of track and hauling them away piece by piece. A crane lingers over the site, lifting segments of the once-thrilling mine train attraction as deconstruction continues. The station, along with much of the ride’s Western theming, is also being stripped away. Marking the end of an era at the park.
Opening with Chessington in 1987 as the Runaway Mine Train, this family coaster quickly earned a spot in the hearts of visitors, young and old. It whisked guests through a dusty desert town before its transformation in 2014, when it was reimagined as Scorpion Express. Complete with fire effects, an animatronic scorpion, and a wild west theme.
Now, as sparks fly and metal is cut, memories of laughter, first coaster rides, and family fun echo through the area. Though the removal brings a sense of sadness, it also marks the beginning of something new.
The ride is being cleared to make way for Project Play, a brand-new family-friendly land opening in Spring 2026. While saying goodbye is never easy. This new development promises fresh adventures and exciting experiences for the next generation of thrill-seekers.
So long, Scorpion Express. You’ve taken millions on their first coaster adventure, sparked joy, and left a lasting legacy. As the dust settles and the last track piece is removed, Chessington looks ahead—with fond memories and high hopes for what’s to come. Goodbye, Scorpion Express.
